Sandra Almond-Cooper was a community leader and activist known as the “Mayor of Mondawmin.” Born and raised in Virgina, she moved to New York at 18 and became involved with the NAACP there throughout the 1970s and 80s. When the NAACP moved their headquarters from New York to Baltimore in 1986, she joined them, resettling in the Mondawmin Neighborhood Improvement Association area. Almond-Cooper became deeply involved in her new community, soon becoming president of the Mondawmin Neighborhood Improvement Association. She held that post for over 20 years, fighting for a greener community, improving community and police relations, and helping bring a farmer’s market to the neighborhood. Almond-Cooper was also closely involved with the Greater Mondawmin Coordinating Council, serving on its board for many years and acting as the Council’s president in 2006-2007. In addition to her work in her immediate community, she remained a dedicated activist with the NAACP, becoming the organization’s Baltimore Chapter President in 2018. Sandra Almond-Cooper passed away in 2021.
