Flossie Dedmond was an accomplished educator and leader at Coppin State University for many years. Originally from Tennessee, Dedmond studied at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. She would go on to work at two other universities in Columbia, Allen and Benedict College, and found the city’s chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She moved to Baltimore during World War Two, first teaching English at Morgan State University and then Coppin State University in 1947.
Dedmond would stay at Coppin for 31 years, eventually retiring in 1978. In her time at Coppin, she was the Head of the English Department, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Dean Emeritus. In addition to her teaching and administrative roles, Dedmond also established endowments and scholarships for Coppin State students. In 1993, Coppin’s first residence hall was named for her. Flossie Dedmond passed away at her Baltimore home in 1998 at age 93.
