Eddie Conway was a political activist who lived in the Parkway community. Upon leaving the Army in the 1960s, Conway became a community organizer in the civil rights movement, working first with the NAACP, then CORE, and finally joining the Black Panther Party. He helped the organization grow in Baltimore and establish their free food pantry program. In 1970, while the FBI was conducting their COINTELPRO program, which was designed to destroy the Black Panther Party and arrest as many members as possible, Conway was arrested for the murder of a Baltimore City Police Officer. There was no physical evidence linking him to the crime and the prosecution relied on testimony from questionable witnesses. Nevertheless, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Freeing Conway became a rallying cry of the Black Power movement for many years. After 44 years in prison, he was released in 2014 after an appellate court found that his trial had been improperly conducted. He used his newfound freedom to continue his activism in Baltimore and became a Presenter for the Real News Network. He was a lifelong learner who earned three degrees while imprisoned and was pursuing a doctorate degree when he passed. Eddie Conway died in California in 2023 at age 76.
